The light and watercolour.

Research

In a watercolour, the light is essential and all the difficulty is well in the representation of this one. it does not matter the techniques used, the subjects chosen, the compositions, this one must be perceived.
Each painter in watercolours will have to seek the means to manage the light for pose on his paper…

Many possibilities will open with you, all different, each one will be effective only if your choice corresponds to the conditions of the environment of your work.

To adapt

This is why it is difficult to teach the watercolour, all the promulgated councils require to adapt to the present moment, the instructions of bases remain always very alléatoires and must be harmonized in flexibility with the style and the personality of each painter in watercolours.

Here some judicious councils which I will give you, for the luminosity of your watercolour.

Environment

The restitution of a luminous zone is function of its environment:
If you leave a white surface (paper), and that you surround it by a tint made up of pigments clear and extremely diluted, you will have the impression of a light fuzzy, soft, filtered…
More your tint will have a tonic color, plus your light will be frank.
If you work with dark pigments your light will become sharp and contrasted. To brighten up a zone, its contour must be darker.

Pigments

Light does not want inevitably to say white:
Many pigments have the characteristic to be very luminous, among those Ci: the pink permanent, terre de sienne brûlée, the green gold, or Prussian blue.
Placed judiciously, even in very small keys, they bring much light in a watercolour. It is necessary to have the audacity to use them in places or logic would dictate not to do it.
I use quequefois the Prussian blue in the shades of my portraits, they often give me an interesting light.
If you to mix directly on your paper, these pigments, you will obtain surprising and bright tint which will help you to illuminate your watercolours.
